I recently published an article on global plugin vehicle sales showing that Tesla accounted for 19% of the world’s plugin electric vehicles (EVs) in the first half of 2020. That includes fully electric vehicles as well as plugin hybrids.
In that article, I highlighted that Tesla had sold almost 3 times as many EVs as #2 Volkswagen (7% global EV market share). Some people were upset that I focused on brands, not corporations. Other people wanted to see the results for only 100% electric vehicles (BEVs). So, here’s a report on corporations (and other intricately mingled “automotive groups”), and this report is split into both the broader plugin vehicle market and the 100% battery electric vehicle market. Top Selling Automotive Groups in Plugin Vehicle Market
Naturally, Tesla still has 19% of the global plugin vehicle market (Tesla the brand = Tesla the corporation, and the total number of EVs sold is the same). What changes is that top selling corporations that own several different automotive brands as well as “alliances” of brands had higher percentages of the overall market.
Volkswagen Group had 13% of the market, almost double the Volkswagen brand’s 7% EV market share. The Renault-Nissan Alliance had 9% of the market. Closing out the top 5, BMW Group and Hyundai–Kia each had 7% of the market.
Those 5 automotive groups accounted for 55% of the global plugin vehicle market.
Top Selling Automotive Groups in 100% Battery Electric Vehicle Market
When you look only at fully electric vehicle sales, Tesla’s market share rises to 28%, while the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Volkswagen Group each had 10%.
BYD and Hyundai-Kia round out the top 5 with 7% each, which, interestingly, was the same share BMW Group (not BYD) and Hyundai–Kia had in the overall plugin electric vehicle rankings.
Combined, these top 5 automotive groups or alliances accounted for 62% of full-electric vehicle sales in the first half of 2020.
What happens in these rankings going forward? Tesla is still rapidly ramping up production capacity, with Model Y production barely underway. Volkswagen Group has commenced a massive powertrain transformation and will soon start selling the Volkswagen ID.3, and not that long afterward the Volkswagen ID.4, as well as various copies of those with different brand markings.
BYD is rolling out the rather luscious Han EV, including in Norway. Off the radar, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is around the corner (though, rumor is that there’s not a lot of production capacity for it — not enough to put Ford in the top 5 here). And then of course there’s the Honda e and Toyota RAV4 Prime. … Oh, never mind.
